All three of these novels were strong contenders. My personal gut reaction was with the novel When the Ground is Hard, but then I decided to vote for Clap When You Land. Now that I am thinking about them, I find I remember such powerful moments from When the Ground is Hard, and the realization of the precarious situations women experience. But to be honest, my memory of Clap is a bit hazy. So it probably has that bit of predictability to it. Oh dear. I made my choice though!
We wanted to create a way where we could read a few books, learn about many titles and have fun doing it! The tournament style reading of the Mighty Smackdown means that in the first round each participant reads two books, discusses both in a blog post, selecting one book to move on to the next round. Teachers are asked to commit to one round but most, if not all, continue on. We will read to the end when we will have only one book left standing!
There's still time, Shelley! Change your vote! I too feel the longterm embrace of those powerful moments in When the Ground is Hard. I think it will stick with us for a while!
