Saint Death is killed and sent Far Away

I'm afraid it's report card season and I will be brief.  Westminster and Westlawn had reps reading Saint Death and Far Away this round.  Turns out, we had very similar reactions.

We all had trouble getting into Saint Death.  I liked the idea of immersing myself into the LatinX character's world and hearing their voices, but couldn't get into it.  Some of us struggled to read through the Spanish punctuation conventions.  The idea of the story taking place in one day and having intrigue involving cartels sounds like it should have grabbed us more than it did.

Far Away was a pretty easy read.  It had nice explorations of the idea of family.  There was a bit of mystery (which I will not spoil), but was pretty predictable.  It is not earth-shattering or life-altering, but engaging enough.  With some mystery, family drama, and a medium talking with the dead, it should be an easy sell to kids.  For these reasons, it wins this round with these readers.
