We wanted to create a way where we could read a few books, learn about many titles and have fun doing it! The tournament style reading of the Mighty Smackdown means that in the first round each participant reads two books, discusses both in a blog post, selecting one book to move on to the next round. Teachers are asked to commit to one round but most, if not all, continue on. We will read to the end when we will have only one book left standing!

The Poet X vs Children of Blood and Bone
Most teachers at Nellie Carlson agree that the Poet X should move on in the competition. The novel is unique, and the compelling story line makes the poetic format comfortable in a short time. Children of Blood and Bone was dark, and the fantasy format was not a winner with our team. Poet X moves on.

Poet X is an outstanding book and I can see it moving on. However, I have to say Children of Blood and Bone is also an excellent, excellent book. I know some (Brad comes to mind) try to avoid fantasy but this book manages to be social commentary and fantasy and then drops some of the most common tropes known to the genre! This might be my zombie pick!
